The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, hosted Nigerian-British professional boxer and two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and his family in Lagos on Saturday.

Joshua, accompanied by his family, paid a courtesy visit to Dabiri-Erewa at her residence.

Sharing a video from the visit, Dabiri-Erewa wrote: “Hosting the champ himself, and members of his family, Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua . A man of unparalleled humility, strength, grace and character . A champ indeed! A champ forever 🙏🏿#ProudlyNigerian”

Anthony Joshua has said that he hopes to fight Tyson Fury in 2025.

Matchroom Boxing’s AJ and Queensberry Promotions’ Fury have had a long-time rivalry in the heavyweight division for the best part of a decade now, with boxing fans worldwide eagerly awaiting the day that the two men finally come to blows in the squared circle to determine who is the better fighter

And it seems as though fight fans may not have to wait much longer to see a bout take place, with Joshua recently revealing that he hopes to settle the score with Fury this year. Speaking with Channels Television about his aims for the future, Joshua explained: “Three-time world champion, and Tyson Fury.”

When asked about a time frame for a lucrative bout with the ‘Gypsy King’, the pugilist added: “I’m not sure, but that’s my target,” before looking directly into the camera and adding: “2025, I’m targeting Tyson Fury.” Media then asked Joshua if he thinks he has a chance against Fury following his recent unanimous-decision loss to Oleksandr Usyk, to which the 35-year-old said: “We’ll see, let us get in the ring. Only God knows, but for me we’ll see in the future.”

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, two heavyweights who are currently on a losing streak and have never been more in need of each other and, as a result, have never been closer to sharing a ring.

For Joshua, in particular, there is now a willingness, closer to acceptance or resignation, to take risks in ways that he might have resisted when he was unbeaten or closer to the top of the heavyweight division

Speaking this week in Lagos, Nigeria, where he visited President Bola Tinubu, Joshua said of a possible fight with Fury: “We’ll see if we get in the ring. Only God knows, but for me, we’ll see in the future“.

Much more revealing was what Joshua said when he spoke to State House Correspondents about the importance of making the right moves in 2025 and regaining everything he lost in 2024. “Time is of the essence, time is limited,” he said. “So I just want to work harder.

For all the artistry at the elite levels of boxing, the footwork and defense, the crisp combinations and pinpoint jabs, there’s nothing quite like a knockout. To see a boxer’s consciousness separated from their body by a thunderous shot is arguably the most visceral moment in all of sports. 2024 was a year that delivered some particularly violent knockouts, many of which came on the sport’s biggest stages. While there were epic KOs across all weight classes, the heavyweights stole the show this year. Our panel of CBS Sports experts sat down, debated and cast our votes for Knockout of…

Anthony Joshua vs Francis Ngannou

Getty Images In a year-round, global sport like boxing, there’s a near-guarantee that every year will produce several great fights. That was no different in 2024, with several viable contenders emerging in the Fight of the Year race. Making 2024 even more interesting was the fact that these great fights took place across a variety of weight classes and for both men and women — and many with the biggest stakes in the sport on the line.

The battle of Britain has eluded fans for many years and is now undoubtedly past its best before date, however it will still be a mega-fight that can fill a stadium.

Why it could happen now is because both men are out of the title picture and looking for big fights before retirement. Joshua lost twice to Oleksandr Usyk before going on a run of four wins to get a shot at Daniel Dubois’ IBF world title. He was knocked out in five. Fury has recently suffered the same fate against Usyk, failing to beat the Ukrainian over 24 rounds.

It is now widely agreed that the match-up is the best out there for both men. How it plays out is anybody’s guess, but there are some shared opponents who can provide good insight.

Swedish southpaw Otto Wallin took Fury the distance back in 2019, inflicting a near-fight ending cut on the Brit before losing on the scorecards. After a run of six victories, he faced Joshua but was stopped inside five rounds.

Joshua was enjoying his best form in years until recently. Since back-to-back losses to Oleksandr Usyk, AJ had rebounded with four victories. Those wins were becoming steadily more impressive too.

A decision victory over Jermaine Franklin was workmanlike, but AJ showed flashes of his old self as he ground down Robert Helenius in seven rounds. By the time he walloped Otto Wallin in five rounds and Francis Ngannou, fresh off giving Tyson Fury fits, in two sessions he looked back to his best.

But Dubois undid over a year of good work in August, when he demolished Joshua at Wembley. The five-round pounding was the most comprehensive loss ever suffered by AJ. Ruiz had shocked him, Usyk had outboxed him but ‘Dynamite’ simply detonated him.

But still, you don’t spend a decade at the top of the sport and deliver some of the biggest nights in modern memory without wielding significant bargaining power. AJ might be coming off a humbling defeat, but there remains huge interest in his next move.

For a while, it looked like Joshua would stick to the habit of a lifetime and rematch Dubois immediately. The Watford man has always attempted to avenge his defeats. Joshua beat Andy Ruiz Jr in a rematch six months after the Mexican inflicted his first career loss. AJ also went straight back in with Usyk after that loss, albeit losing the return.

Oleksandr Usyk cemented his legacy as an all-time great when he beat Tyson Fury for a second time in Saudi Arabia.

The unified heavyweight champion boxed brilliantly against the bigger and taller Fury, using his speed to land quick jabs to Fury’s body and face. Fury landed hard shots, but Usyk landed the more efficient blows in the eyes of the judges.

Usyk won via unanimous decision (116-112, 116-112, 116-112). The Ukrainian landed more shots (179 of 423 shots – 42.3%) compared to Fury (114 of 509 – 28.3%) and landed 20+ shots three times in the last four rounds. It was the second straight loss for Fury, who attempted to become a three-time champion.

Many wondered if the judges would be in favor of Fury, as there was interest in a trilogy. In the end, some of the top stars in the world praised Usyk’s skills and the efforts of both men.

Two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua’s next fight could likely be determined by the outcome of tonight’s blockbuster heavyweight rematch between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.

The ‘Gypsy King’ will be desperate to get his revenge later this evening against the Ukrainian in what promises to be a mouthwatering sequel in Riyadh. Usyk won the first meeting back in May via a razor-thin split decision. Following the victory, ‘The Cat’ became the first undisputed world heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis back in 1999.

Millions are expected to tune in tonight, but perhaps the most important viewer is Joshua. The Brit has been forced to start from scratch in his bid to become a three-time heavyweight champion after being brutally knocked out by Daniel Dubois back in September at Wembley Stadium.

Bob Arum made the trek to Saudi Arabia because – like everyone else – he’s fascinated to see what will transpire in Saturday’s rematch between his former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and the unbeaten three-belt heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

“He’s in great mental shape,” Arum told BoxingScene, “but let’s be honest about it, he’s not a spring chicken anymore.”

At 36, Fury has been through 242 rounds of professional boxing action, including an astounding six knockdowns in his past nine fights.

Joshua confident Fury fight will happen

Those range from the most severe – that 12th-round belting by Deontay Wilder that knocked Fury briefly unconscious – to the most damning – the ninth-round barrage and dropping that cost Fury the first Usyk fight by split decision on May 18.

Before that – and even after it, if you can recall the video scene of Fury tumbling over himself outside a bar in the days after the Usyk loss – there was the hard living that Fury engaged in, causing a three-year absence following his 2015 upset victory over long-reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko.
