It’s true that Logan Paul, at 6-foot-2 and around 200 pounds, will have some 50 pounds and 6 inches on Floyd Mayweather Jr. when they share a boxing ring on Feb. 20, 2021. But while Mayweather has spent 43 years on this spectacle-spinning planet, while Paul is just 25 years old, the boxing legend seems worried to think about his fight with the former YouTuber. How might boxing benefit? This latest showcase of celebrity fisticuffs could help indoctrinate a new generation into the joys of jabs. On the other hand, it could plunge boxing’s long history of farcical spectacles to a whole new depth of degradation.
Woods said his back began to spasm over the final few holes in the Genesis Invitational at Riviera. He said that’s what led to his 8-iron from the middle of the 18th fairway that shot off at a 45-degree angle into the eucalyptus trees.
“Oh, definitely I shanked it,” Woods said. “My back was spasming the last couple holes and it was locking up. I came down and it didn’t move and I presented hosel first and shanked it.
It was no less shocking for the 48-year-old Woods, even at this stage in his career when his back and legs have gone through more surgeries than he has won majors (15). Woods couldn’t recall the last time he hit a cold shank — basically hitting the ball anywhere except on the clubface — except for making some imaginative flop shots around the green.
At least he put it behind him quickly. His shank was behind some eucalyptus trees that frame the right side of the fairway. The shot called for the same club he had just shanked — 8-iron — for a low punch between the trees. And it came out beautifully to 15 feet.
“I had a small window there and tried to hit a punch-hook 8-iron after I just shanked an 8-iron,” he said. “I said, ‘All right, the next shot is supposed to be the harder shot.’ And yes, it was because I’m having to hit a little punch hook through a little gap there.
“And I pulled it off, which is good.”
He still missed the putt and had to settle for a 1-over 72, leaving him eight shots behind Patrick Cantlay and needing to play better on Friday if he wants to stick around for the weekend and wear his new Sun Day Red apparel for golf and not just the trophy ceremony.
Emma Raducanu recently shared a glimpse of her time in Abu Dhabi after her Qatar Open exit. The 2021 US Open winner toured the city’s landscapes, visited the desert, and explored an art gallery.
Emma Raducanu returned to the WTA tour in January after recovering from an injury that had sidelined her since April 2023.
Raducanu received a wildcard into the singles main draw at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open, but she was knocked out in the first round of the tournament by Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina with scores of 6-0, 7-6 (8-6).
On Thursday, the Brit posted a couple of pictures on Instagram from her time in Abu Dhabi. In one, she was standing in the sunset in the desert on a sand dune, and in another, she was seen art-viewing in the gallery, along with others, where she explored the scenic landscapes.
In the caption, she mentioned learning a lot and having epic experiences during the trip.
Emma Raducanu missed the majority of the 2023 season due to injuries that required surgery; however, she has since recovered and is back on the WTA tour, having competed in four WTA tournaments.
The 21-year-old made her return at the 2024 ASB Classic in Auckland, where she defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the first round. In the round of 16, she was knocked out by eventual finalist Elina Svitolina.
Seven-time Major winner Venus Williams recently expressed pride at her recent venture ‘Copa 71’, a sports documentary that she co-produced with younger sister Serena and football star Alex Morgan.
Venus is one of the best tennis players in the history of the sport. Having said that, her exploits are not limited to the court. She founded her clothing brand ‘EleVen’ 17 years ago, which unfortunately ceased its operations earlier this month.
Aside from her interest in fashion, Venus Williams also co-produced Copa 71 with Serena Williams and Alex Morgan. The documentary film, which told the extraordinary story of the 1971 Women’s Soccer World Cup, has been making waves recently. Its rights were recently acquired by Greenwich Entertainment, a US-based independent film distribution company specializing in narrative and documentary feature films.
Against that background, Venus took to her X account to celebrate the sports documentary being exhibited in theatres countrywide. She also remarked that “women can achieve anything, despite all odds”.
The documentary film, set in Mexico, is directed by James Erskine and Rachel Ramsay and stars footballers like Brandi Chastain, Elvira Aracen, and Birte Kjems. Interestingly enough, Serena Williams narrated a few parts of the documentary film.
Westbrook Studios was the production house behind financing and promoting Copa 71. For those unaware, they also produced the award-winning biopic ‘King Richard’, which chronicled the life of Serena and Venus Williams’ father Richard.
Meanwhile, Venus Williams has not played a professional tennis match since suffering a 1-6, 1-6 blowout loss to Belgium’s Greet Minnen in the first round of the 2023 US Open. She will, however, make her much-awaited comeback at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells next month.
Boxing fans received exciting news in early January 2024 when fight promoter Eddie Hearn announced that Francis Ngannou will take on Anthony Joshua in a heavyweight boxing match.
Their showdown will occur in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday, March 9. It will last 10 rounds.
Ngannou, dubbed “The Predator,” is a former UFC heavyweight champion who left the UFC in 2023 to pursue boxing. Ngannou never lost his UFC heavyweight belt.
He lost his first boxing matchup to Tyson Fury by split decision in Riyadh last October, holding his own against “The Gypsy King” despite being a +1100 underdog.
He knocked Fury down in the third round.
It was a promising start to Ngannou’s boxing career after rejecting an offer from the UFC that could have made him the highest-paid heavyweight in the promotion’s history.
Now, the 37-year-old Cameroonian returns to Riyadh to build on his debut and prove he belongs.
That won’t be easy against Joshua, a two-time world heavyweight champion two inches taller than Ngannou. The 34-year-old British star is coming off three straight wins, most recently taking down Otto Wallin by TKO in five rounds on Dec. 23.
Of Joshua’s 27 career victories, 24 have come by knockout. He’s only lost three fights.
Who is Favored in Joshua vs. Ngannou?
Ngannou opened as a considerable underdog with +470 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, while Joshua opened a -550 favorite. Bettors apparently liked the value on Ngannou, as by mid-February Joshua had tightened to a -470 favorite, with Ngannou at +380.
Despite the relatively lopsided odds, Ngannou has more respect from oddsmakers after his strong showing against Fury.
Joshua was initially expected to face rival Deontay Wilder in March, but that matchup fell apart after Joseph Parker upset Wilder in December.
Joshua is expected to promote the Ngannou fight during a news conference scheduled for Jan. 15 in London. You can expect Joshua and Ngannou to have much respect for each other.
Joseph Parker is wondering where Deontay Wilder “is coming from” after the American made a series of excuses for his shock defeat in Saudi Arabia in December.
One of the three judges ruled that Wilder lost all 12 rounds in an unanimous decision loss to the underdog Kiwi heavyweight in Riyadh just before Christmas as Parker upset the odds with one of his best ever performances.
Wilder is no stranger to listing tenuous reasons for his losses – he blamed one of his defeats to Tyson Fury on wearing heavy elaborate headgear and armour on a ring walk – and the latest is almost as entertaining.
“It was a boring fight,” Wilder said in an interview.
“Nothing really happened. I went back to training the next day. He didn’t really do anything. They [the judges] just went off the little flurries or whatever.
“In the training for that I had to travel two times – 20 hours of travelling. And those guys were already in Europe. They were only two or three hours away. I’m not complaining, I’m just saying what I had to go through.”
The reality was the three judges gave the victory to Parker via an extremely wide decision because the normally destructive Wilder fought almost entirely on the back foot and was unwilling or unable to connect cleanly with his notorious right hand.
It was a curious departure from his mindset straight after the fight when he said: “My timing was off a little bit. Big love to Joseph, he did a great job avoiding a lot of my punches.
Cris Cyborg and Claressa Shields are continuing their bantering, with the former dropping a new video breaking things down.
The two prolific pugilists had an encounter over the Super Bowl weekend festivities, with Shields having a conversation with Cyborg at a media row.
‘The GWOAT’ had come out with a post on X intimating that she, in her words, checked Cyborg’s temperature. To this assertion of her composure changing up at all, the former UFC featherweight champion posted a response video and also did so on X.
Cris Cyborg and her recent endeavors in boxing
The 38-year-old is well regarded in mixed martial arts, with championships at 145 pounds under the Strikeforce and Bellator banners as well. She has also been concurrently boxing in recent years and is clearly looking to take on massive challenges as evidenced by eyeing a fight with an undefeated multi-division world champion.
Cris Cyborg made her professional debut in the sweet science in December 2022. She scored a unanimous decision win over Gabrielle Holloway in a four-round affair. Thosefistic fireworks transpired at CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska, with the decorated MMA fighter dropping Holloway in the third round.
The Brazilian bruiser did not compete under Queensberry Rules for the entirety of 2023 but returned to the sport this calendar year in emphatic fashion.
The Curitiba native then had her sophomore boxing bout on January 19th of this year and scored a first-round KO in the process. She put the first blemish on the pro boxing record of Kelsey Wickstrum during their prizefight at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.
Cyborg has had both of her boxing bouts at 154 pounds and in MMA normally fights at 145 pounds. The call for a Claressa Shields fight at 147 seems to be a pseudo-middle ground for her in that sense, while for Shields, she has mostly been competing at 160 pounds as of late.
The two combatants have known each other for several years and have a training history as they have sparred multiple times with one another.
The wait is finally over. Tiger Woods is all set to make his season debut on the PGA Tour. The Sunday Red mastermind will be spreading his magic at Riviera Golf Course till February 18th.
Who is a better support for a father than his children? However Sam Woods and Charlie Woods were not spotted at the Pro-Am section of the event being held in Los Angeles. Unlike their time at the PNC Championship in 2023, instead of Sam Woods, Lance Bennet, a veteran caddie, will be seen alongside Woods.
However, the 48-year-old was not without familial support in the Pro-Am event. Instead, he was accompanied by his half-niece, Cheyenne Woods, and her husband, Aaron Hicks. So the question arises: Will the tournament host’s family be present on the course in the upcoming days?
The short answer is maybe. It is possible that the Woods siblings will make an appearance in the coming days, based on their school schedule, which indicates that they will have no classes from February 16th till February 19th.
Rafael Nadal has explained why he doesn’t consider Roger Federer a friend despite being central to the Swiss maestro’s emotional farewell from the sport. Federer, 42, retired after the Laver Cup in September 2022, having won 20 Grand Slam titles and been long-cemented as an all-time great.
Both Nadal and Novak Djokovic have since surpassed Federer’s number of Slam wins, amid much debate over who deserves to be labelled the greatest male player in history. But regardless, the rivalry between the Spaniard and the Swiss star during their peak years remains iconic, and the pair have long voiced their mutual respect for one another.
Federer’s final bow came in a doubles match alongside Nadal, although the European pair were beaten in a tie-break decider by Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock. Afterwards, the ‘King of Clay’ was visibly struggling with his emotions, breaking down in tears as his partner waved goodbye to the crowd.
However, in an interview with El Objectve de La Sexta, Nadal has explained that despite his admiration for Federer, the pair are not too close on a friendship level. “I wouldn’t consider him a friend,” he said. “But someone familiar, with whom I have a great relationship.”
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday hailed longtime rival Novak Djokovic as the best player in the history of the sport.
“The numbers say yes, for me yes (he is the best in history),” Nadal said in an interview with El Objective de La Sexta when asked “who is the best?”
Djokovic has 24 Grand Slam titles having surpassed Nadal’s 22 when he captured last year’s French Open.
Despite that success, the controversial world number one from Serbia still struggles to translate his on-court triumphs into off-court popularity.
“The image he projects is worse than he really is; I think he’s a good person,” added Nadal.
“There are moments of frustration. Novak breaks his racquet, but the next point he is ready to play at 100% again and it is the best I have ever seen.”
Nadal, 37, has been battling injury and missed virtually all of 2023. He was hurt again last month before sitting out the Australian Open.
With his career winding down, Nadal hailed compatriot and heir Carlos Alcaraz who is already a two-time major winner at the age of 20.
