Fighting Words: All-time debate shouldn’t distract from Oleksandr Usyk’s accomplishments

Seemingly everything in boxing is up for debate, the fighting extending from beyond those ropes and between those bells. But this much is inarguable:

Oleksandr Usyk, as of earlier this year, was the undisputed heavyweight champion. Usyk, while no longer undisputed (he vacated the IBF title) remains the king of the heavyweight division. And Usyk is clearly the best heavyweight of the past decade or so.

It’s when you discuss his historical standing beyond 2015, and particularly 2004, that the traditional water-cooler conversations begin to boil over into conflict.

I’m not here to settle that debate, nor to stifle it. Debate is a fundamental (and fun) element of being a sports fan. But I just have never been too engrossed in or enamored by historical comparisons and fantasy matches. Rafael Nadal isn’t backing down. The tennis legend, who signed a lucrative deal to become an ambassador for Saudi Arabian tennis, has fired back at critics who slammed his involvement with the controversial regime.

“So I accept the critics, especially I respect the critics who criticise things while respecting other people,” Nadal told The National. “When they don’t respect, it’s a different story. But at the end of the day, I know when I make the decision that’s [criticism] going to be happening. But in some way I don’t care that much if I really achieve the goal that I want to achieve here.”

Nadal, who retired from professional tennis in November, remains committed to his mission to grow the sport in Saudi Arabia. He recently visited Jeddah to attend the NextGen ATP Finals, where he interacted with young players and emphasized his desire to leave a lasting impact.

Joshua was enjoying his best form in years until recently. Since back-to-back losses to Oleksandr Usyk, AJ had rebounded with four victories. Those wins were becoming steadily more impressive too.

A decision victory over Jermaine Franklin was workmanlike, but AJ showed flashes of his old self as he ground down Robert Helenius in seven rounds. By the time he walloped Otto Wallin in five rounds and Francis Ngannou, fresh off giving Tyson Fury fits, in two sessions he looked back to his best.

But Dubois undid over a year of good work in August, when he demolished Joshua at Wembley. The five-round pounding was the most comprehensive loss ever suffered by AJ. Ruiz had shocked him, Usyk had outboxed him but ‘Dynamite’ simply detonated him.

But still, you don’t spend a decade at the top of the sport and deliver some of the biggest nights in modern memory without wielding significant bargaining power. AJ might be coming off a humbling defeat, but there remains huge interest in his next move.

For a while, it looked like Joshua would stick to the habit of a lifetime and rematch Dubois immediately. The Watford man has always attempted to avenge his defeats. Joshua beat Andy Ruiz Jr in a rematch six months after the Mexican inflicted his first career loss. AJ also went straight back in with Usyk after that loss, albeit losing the return.
