Ngannou Can Still Count on Support From Hero Tyson

Francis Ngannou’s trainer, Dewey Cooper, has revealed that Mike Tyson was present only “a couple times” during the 16-week training camp for Ngannou’s fight against heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

Ngannou, a former UFC champion, caused a seismic shock when he dropped Fury on his way to a split decision defeat in a close fight against the WBC heavyweight champion.

After the fight, Mike Tyson lifted Ngannou’s hand aloft, but Cooper revealed during an interview earlier this week that the heavyweight great was not as heavily involved in Ngannou’s preparations as it might have seemed to some.

“He was only there a couple times,” Cooper said. “Mike Tyson talks to Francis often, and that’s what matters. The support of a great guy like Mike Tyson – he did come through a few times throughout the training camp, and that helped a lot.”

Social media videos of Tyson taking Ngannou on the pads and coverage from broadcasters gave the impression that the boxing legend was a mainstay in the UFC star’s training camp.

Floyd Mayweather introduces elite Terence Crawford title matchup

Mayweather identified Jaron Ennis as the prime candidate to try and dethrone the pound-for-pound king of boxing.

He took his stance on the grounds of Crawford not being able to land a bout against Canelo Alvarez or a rematch with Errol Spence Jr.

Now seven months removed from his seventh-round knockout of Spence Jr., Mayweather thinks that Crawford and Ennis is next up on the itinerary.

The Money Team founder sat down for an interview with Fight Hype and gave sound reason for a Crawford and Ennis welterweight contest:

“Somebody’s got to give ‘Boots’ the opportunity. It’s been difficult for Terence Crawford to get the Spence rematch done, it’s been difficult to get the Canelo fight done, so his other option is to fight ‘Boots’ Ennis,” Mayweather said

‘Boots’ Ennis possesses the speed, flash, and technical skills to bother Crawford. He’d also be the last major pugilist at 147 pounds for Crawford to potentially best before moving up in weight, which he’s long desired.

Mayweather also drew from his fight with Canelo Alvarez back in 2013. He stated that giving Alvarez a chance helped boost his profile. Win or lose, Ennis is at a juncture in his career where a strong performance against Crawford would similarly pay immeasurable dividends.

The duo of Frank Edwards and Mackenzie Hughes had the best gross score at 64, while John Pinkham and Erik van Rooyen posted the top net score at 62.

Nadal to combat Raonic threat in Indian Wells opener

Three-time champion Rafael Nadal will face former Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic in a testing first-round match at the BNP Paribas Open.

Monday’s draw for the year’s first ATP Masters 1000 of the year threw up an interesting challenge for the Spaniard, who reached the final in 2022 during his last visit to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Nadal leads Raonic 8-2 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head Series, but the Canadian won their lone meeting in the desert: a 4-6, 7-6(10), 7-5 classic in 2015.

Nadal will be making just his second appearance of the year, following a quarter-final run to the ATP 250 in Brisbane in the first week of the season.

Raonic, a former No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings, has been competitive in his two outings this year but has been let down by his 33-year-old body. At his last start, he pushed Jannik Sinner to a first-set tie-break in the Rotterdam quarter-finals before retiring. At the Australian Open he split sets with Alex de Minaur before retiring early in the third.

Tyson Fury Hails Joshua-Ngannou as a ‘Great Fight’

Tyson Fury has said Francis Ngannou should be grateful for the opportunity in which he finds himself ahead of Friday’s fight with Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia.

MMA fighters and boxers, as a rule, do not historically cross over into one another’s realms with great success.

Ngannou broke that generalization with a valiant and impressive performance against Fury in October, dropping the WBC heavyweight champion with a knockdown that shocked both sporting fraternities.

Fury eventually clawed himself back into the fight and squeaked past Ngannou with a narrow split decision.

Initial plans for Friday were for former unified heavyweight champion Joshua to take on longtime rival Deontay Wilder. Such plans were scuttled by Joseph Parker, who bullied, outfought and outboxed Wilder on Dec. 23. Wilder and Parker shared the billing with Joshua, who forced Otto Wallin to be withdrawn by his corner after five rounds.

Fury, speaking to “The Stomping Ground,” said Ngannou should be grateful to him for improving his finances and finding himself in a position to generate more money against Joshua.
