The short game is where strokes are saved — and where you can really separate yourself from your competition. You don’t have to be the best tee-to-green if you’re handy with a wedge and putter in your hands.

Despite the importance of a great short game for elite play, lots of recreational players don’t devote ample practice time to the craft. Instead, they park themselves on the range and wail away with the big stick. If you want to become a great player, though, you’ll have to become a solid wedge player.

One of the all-time greats with a wedge in hand is none other than Phil Mickelson. The six-time major winner has been a must-see player throughout his entire career, but when he gets a wedge in hand is when his wizardry really shines.

In a recent video posted on X, Mickelson shared a valuable secret to his followers: how to stop blading chip shots for good. Check it out below.

Eight years ago, Martina Navratilova summed up the problem with the one-handed backhand in today’s game: “It practically takes a genius to hit [one],” she said.

The great Czech-American champion used a single-hander herself to win 18 Grand Slam singles titles from 1978 to 1990. But by the time she spoke those words, in 2016, the stroke had been declining—in use, though not in popularity—for nearly half a century. Last week, that downhill slide reached another milestone when Stefanos Tsitsipas dropped out of the ATP’s Top 10 and left it with no one-handed backhands for the first time since the start of computer rankings in 1973. The state of the stroke is even more dire on the women’s side, where 47th-ranked, 36-year-old Tatjana Maria has the only one-hander among the Top 60.

Navratilova was right: As the sport evolved, and players spent more time slugging from the baseline, it became increasingly difficult to survive the ground-stoke onslaught with just one hand.

Tennis champion Novak Djokovic is practicing on the UCLA campus at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Djokovic was practicing on campus on Wednesday ahead of the BNP Paribas Indian Wells Open, which begins on March 8 in the Palm Springs area.

This will be Djokovic’s return to the Indian Wells tournament in five years, for the first time since 2019. Since Djokovic chose not to get vaccinated for COVID-19, he was unable to attend several meets since the pandemic began, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

With the news of Djokovic on campus, plenty of UCLA students filed into the tennis stadium to watch Djokovic practice. The tennis stadium is a common walkway for students walking to and from campus to their dorms or apartments, so it’s not surprising to see that many discovered Djokovic was on campus and decided to watch.

Following his practice, fans even swarmed Djokovic on the UCLA tennis courts, hoping to snap a picture or get an autograph, via Jack Nelson of the Daily Bruin.

Prior to Anthony Joshua‘s fight with Otto Wallin in December, it was not exactly clear which direction the Brit’s career was heading.

In his previous four fights, Joshua had worked with three different trainers, and not looked entirely convincing with any of them in his corner.

Joshua’s long-term coach Rob McCracken was dumped after his first loss to Oleksandr Usyk, and Robert Garcia couldn’t change the result in the rematch. In came another American, Derrick James, but Joshua still only laboured to wins over fringe contenders Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius.

When the two-time heavyweight champion announced he would be trying another trainer to take on Wallin, it appeared he was lacking clarity on how he wanted to go about his business.

But Joshua proved the doubters wrong. With the highly-rated Ben Davison in his corner, AJ looked back to his brutal best as he broke down his opponent and forced the Swede’s corner to throw in the towel after five rounds.

In a post on social media, Benfica uploaded a video of Tyson draped in a club scarf as he spoke to fans.
