Just a few games into Emma Raducanu’s first contest of the new season, it was clear that an uncomfortable day lay ahead. Having been forced to withdraw from her first scheduled tournament, Raducanu arrived at the Australian Open rusty and undercooked.

Under the heightened stress of a grand slam first round match, Raducanu’s serve was completely out of control, double faults cascading from her racket.

As was the case with Jack Draper on the same court less than 24 hours earlier, the end goal for any player in this situation is simple: survive for another day so that there are more opportunities during the tournament to improve.

Raducanu showed her survival instincts by fighting through a self-sabotaging 15 double faults to deliver a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) win over Ekaterina Alexandrova, the 26th seed, in the first round of the Australian Open.

We are just two days away from the start of the Australian Open main draw, with excitement building ahead of the first Grand Slam of the new year.

Emma Raducanu was the only British player to draw a seed in the first round, having been pitted against Ekaterina Alexandrova in her opening match. Katie Boulter will face Rebecca Marino, while Jack Draper has been drawn against Mariano Navone.

The 22-year-old British tennis star said her hand and ankle swelled up but she refused the treatment in case contamination led to a positive doping test.

Raducanu told reporters at a pre-tournament news conference on Friday: “All of us are probably quite sensitive to what we take on board, what we use.

“Yesterday, for example, I got really badly bitten by I don’t know what, like ants, mosquitoes, something. I’m allergic, I guess.

“They flared up and swelled up really a lot.”

She added: “Someone was, like, giving me this antiseptic spray, natural, to try to ease the bites.

He could potentially face Carlos Alcaraz in the third round, with Novak Djokovic also in that quarter of the draw. The 39-year-old will begin his campaign against teenage American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy.

Elsewhere in the draw, British hopeful Jacob Fearnley has been handed a blockbuster debut against Nick Kyrgios, who faces a race against time to be fit after picking up an abdominal injury.

Novak Djokovic could play Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and may also have to face World No 2 Alexander Zverev and World No 1 Jannik Sinner if he is to win a 25th grand slam title in Melbourne.

The 37-year-old, who will be coached by Andy Murray at the opening grand slam of the season, is seeded seventh for the tournament he has won 10 times and was drawn in the same quarter as World No 3 Alcaraz

Djokovic and Alcaraz, 21, have faced each other in three grand slam finals as well as the Olympics final, won by the Serbian last year, with Zverev a possible opponent in the semis and defending champion Sinner on the opposite side of the draw.

Emma Raducanu was the only British player to draw a seed, meanwhile, as the former US Open champion takes on No 26 Ekaterina Alexandrova. British No 1 Katie Boulter, who is seeded 22nd, faces Rebecca Marino of Canada in her opening round.

Three-time Grand Slam winner Sabalenka started her 12th consecutive week at the top of the rankings on Monday to move to 20 weeks in total, putting her joint-20th with Belgian great Clijsters.

She is assured of remaining top for at least another two weeks and next week she will move level with Tracy Austin and Maria Sharapova on 21 weeks in 18th place before edging ahead of them a week later. Naomi Osaka in 17th place on 25 weeks will be her target after that.

Sabalenka strengthened her lead over Swiatek after she won the Brisbane International – her 18th career title – while her Polish rival lost in the final of the United Cup.

The Belarusian is now 1,536 points ahead, but that is not enough to ensure she remains at No 1 after the Australian Open as she will defend 2,000 points while Swiatek will drop only 130 points

The Australian Open gets underway on Sunday, January 12 at Melbourne Park and comes to a conclusion a fortnight later with the women’s final set for Saturday, January 25 and the men’s singles final taking place on Sunday, January 26.

It will be the 113th time that the tournament has taken place while this year’s event is the 57th edition in the Open Era.

This year will also be only the second time in history that the Australian Open starts on a Sunday following the switch last year with opening round matches taking place over three days instead of two.

Qualifying, though, starts on Monday, January 6 with the final round taking place on January 10.

Melbourne Park – situated in the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct where the Melbourne Cricket Ground and AAMI Park are also housed – has been the venue of the Australian Open since 1988.

Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club – also in Melbourne – hosted the major before that while the likes of Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth as well as Christchurch and Hastings in New Zealand have also played host in the past.

The former British number one would have been looking to get back on track as early as possible this time around, with Raducanu having been training well.

But her Australian Open preparations were dealt a huge blow with a back injury, which has ruled her out of the ongoing WTA 250 event in Auckland.

Raducanu managed 34 WTA Tour matches in 2024, with the former world number 10 winning 21 and losing 13.

But her latest setback seemingly hasn’t knocked her spirit, with Raducanu sharing images of her training and life in general on Instagram, writing the caption: “Being grateful for health and channelling into growth.”

The 22-year-old will now fly to Melbourne to continue her preparations for the Australian Open, which starts on January 12.

Second-seeded Elise Mertens also withdrew on Tuesday from the tournament, citing an ankle injury, with Jodie Burrage taking the Belgian’s place in the competition.

“Tried my best to be ready,” Raducanu said. “I love Auckland and the fans here, but unfortunately I picked up a back niggle and won’t be ready in time.”

The draw has been made, the courts are ready and the ball kids have been assembled for the start of New Zealand’s premier tennis tournament.

The action at the Auckland Tennis Centre starts on Monday with the women’s week of the ASB Classic – and for the first time in a long time, we have a real chance of seeing a local going deep and potentially lifting the trophy.

But it’s not just about the action on the court. The ASB Classic is as much about what goes on in the stands, boxes and out in the hospitality area, so there is plenty to look forward to in our all-too-brief summer of tennis.

Here is a look at who is competing and what to look out for:

Madison Keys will be feeling pretty good right now. The last time she came to Auckland back in 2013 she was bundled out in qualifying, but this time returns as the number one seed.
