Floyd Mayweather has long made it a practice of flaunting his lavish wealth, and over the recent Super Bowl weekend that included taking to Instagram to tout the $1.1 million he said he spent on luxury Super Bowl suite tickets for himself and 34 friends. But it also included a post about a much larger expenditure, and one that was almost certainly less fun, unless he was rooting for the 49ers: a check to the IRS totaling more than $18 million.

Mayweather started up with a post about his Super Bowl plans with the following caption:

“Just before I paid that light million and change for that little Super Bowl stuff,” Mayweather posted. “I had to pay the IRS aka Uncle Sam $18,047,181. This is what I owed in taxes while I’m retired so just imagine what I was paying when I was activated.”

Mayweather might be retired from boxing but a tax bill like that shows he’s still making plenty of money from endorsements and other investments. Fortunately for him and his inner circle, he seems to still be doing OK, although it might make you wonder how many more people he could have taken to the Super Bowl if he didn’t have taxes to worry about.

It’s true that Logan Paul, at 6-foot-2 and around 200 pounds, will have some 50 pounds and 6 inches on Floyd Mayweather Jr. when they share a boxing ring on Feb. 20, 2021. But while Mayweather has spent 43 years on this spectacle-spinning planet, while Paul is just 25 years old, the boxing legend seems worried to think about his fight with the former YouTuber. How might boxing benefit? This latest showcase of celebrity fisticuffs could help indoctrinate a new generation into the joys of jabs. On the other hand, it could plunge boxing’s long history of farcical spectacles to a whole new depth of degradation.

Mayweather, who lives in the city, divulged that he spent $1.1million (£870,000) paying for 34 friends to watch the game.

In his first post, Mayweather said: “I don’t kiss ass and I never have to beg for nothing especially not to get a Super Bowl suite.

“I don’t mind accepting invites at times, but one thing’s for sure… the person that’s paying does all the saying.

“Therefore I get my own seats and suites so I can do what I want and invite who I want!

I’m blessed to be taking 34 people to experience the first Super Bowl in Las Vegas! $1,131,000.00.”

After this, Mayweather went on to reveal the $1.1million (£870,000) was nothing to him, as he paid $18million (£14.3million) in tax earlier in the day.

In the game itself, the Kansas City Chiefs pulled off a dramatic win over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime.

This result helped Mayweather claw back some of the money he spent on the suite.

He posted on Instagram on Sunday to show his betting slip post-match.

How Floyd Mayweather Became Boxing's First $1 Billion Fighter

Mayweather bet $95,000 (£75,000) on the Chiefs to win.

As a result, he won $203,000 (£161,000) on the game.

However, it must be said that the man who earned hundreds of millions on single nights in his fighting prime is used to bigger bets than this.

On the bright side though, his bets this year performed significantly better than in 2023.

Mayweather bet against the Chiefs last year, placing $10,000 ($8,000) on the Philadelphia Eagles to beat Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Andy Reid.

The Chiefs rallied to win Super Bowl LVII, downing the Eagles 38-35, and giving Mayweather’s 10 grand to the house.
