Kyrgios described Sinner and Iga Swiatek’s positive doping tests as “disgusting” as he spoke to the media ahead of his return to action after a long injury lay-off.

The combative Australian has been an outspoken critic of Sinner since he escaped a ban following a positive doping test after an anabolic steroid was found to be in his system.

The World Anti-Doping Agenda have appealed a decision by the International Tennis Integrity Agency to clear Sinner of blame and Kygios piled the pressure on the defending Australian Open champion as he spoke to the media in Brisbane.

“I have to be outspoken about it because I don’t think there’s enough people that are speaking about it. I think people are trying to sweep it under the rug.

Novak Djokovic: Jannik Sinner has the potential to be tennis' number one - Eurosport

The ATP Tour is intriguingly poised, as the rest of the field try to prise the four Grand Slam trophies away from world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, who split them two apiece in 2024. Novak Djokovic is in search of his record-breaking 25th major singles title with Andy Murray in tow as coach; world No. 2 Alexander Zverev and the rest of his generation are reckoning with how Sinner and Alcaraz have reconfigured the sport. An exciting crop of younger players are impatient to usurp their forebears, the American men are looking to take the next step and if the ATP Next Gen Finals is anything to go by, an 18-year-old from Rio de Janeiro called Joao Fonseca is going to be a problem very soon.

But all this could hinge not on games, sets and matches, but on the court in Switzerland that will decide the outcome of Sinner’s doping case. The Athletic’s tennis writers, Matthew Futterman and Charlie Eccleshare, outline the biggest men’s tennis storylines for the 2025 season.

Just two months into the 2024 tennis season and after our first edition of our ATP power rankings we are definitely starting to see some players rise and potentially challenge Novak Djokovic for the top spot on the ATP tour. In fact, as you will see below, we see one player already overtaking Djokovic. For now, at least.

Following a busy week in Rotterdam, Buenos Aires, and Delray Beach last week – and it should be noted Djokovic played in none of those tournaments – but with mostly expected results, there were not many changes. The top of the rankings changed and the bottom as well.

The question is, of course, how long the new number one can stay atop the rankings. He has not lost this year so far. Here are the rankings as we see fit now.

Power ranking the ATP top ten

1. Jannik Sinner (Previous ranking – 2)

Following his triumph in Rotterdam there is really no doubt that Sinner is the hottest name in the sport right now. The past few months have been incredible for the 22-year-old and with some big wins over players below him on the list in recent times, he has certainly justified his spot at number one.
