Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has backed Anthony Joshua to defeat Tyson Fury when they eventually meet, insisting the British-Nigerian only needs to improve his self-confidence to return to the top, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Despite Joshua’s recent knockout defeat to IBF champion Daniel Dubois, Wilder believes a clash between the British rivals would go the distance, with Joshua emerging victorious if he can overcome his mental barriers.

“I can see Joshua beating him (Fury). It’s crazy to say, some people are like how do you see that?” Wilder said.

“But I can really see Joshua winning that fight, to be honest. If he goes in and does what he has to do and does not think so much. I think Joshua thinks a lot. He doubts himself a lot as well. I don’t think he has a lot of self-motivation or self-confidence.

“I think if he changes a few things mentally, he can come back and redeem himself more so than ever.”

Parker first became WBO heavyweight champion back in 2016 with a victory over Andy Ruiz, and has remained near the top of the division for nearly a decade.

He lost his title to Anthony Joshua in 2018, but has had a career resurgence in the past 12 months, defeating Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang to earn himself another crack at world honours.

That comes in February, when he challenges Daniel Dubois for his IBF heavyweight title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the same card as Artur Beterbiev and Dmity Bivol‘s rematch for the undisputed light-heavyweight title.

While Parker may have shared the ring with Wilder, Zhang and Joshua, it’s another man that he deems to have been his toughest ever opponent, as he revealed to Carl Froch on his Froch On Fighting YouTube channel.

Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury now looks likely for 2025.

The battle of Britain has eluded fans for many years and is now undoubtedly past its best before date, however it will still be a mega-fight that can fill a stadium.

Why it could happen now is because both men are out of the title picture and looking for big fights before retirement. Joshua lost twice to Oleksandr Usyk before going on a run of four wins to get a shot at Daniel Dubois’ IBF world title. He was knocked out in five. Fury has recently suffered the same fate against Usyk, failing to beat the Ukrainian over 24 rounds.

It is now widely agreed that the match-up is the best out there for both men. How it plays out is anybody’s guess, but there are some shared opponents who can provide good insight.

Swedish southpaw Otto Wallin took Fury the distance back in 2019, inflicting a near-fight ending cut on the Brit before losing on the scorecards. After a run of six victories, he faced Joshua but was stopped inside five rounds.

Tyson Fury has said Francis Ngannou should be grateful for the opportunity in which he finds himself ahead of Friday’s fight with Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia.

MMA fighters and boxers, as a rule, do not historically cross over into one another’s realms with great success.

Ngannou broke that generalization with a valiant and impressive performance against Fury in October, dropping the WBC heavyweight champion with a knockdown that shocked both sporting fraternities.

Fury eventually clawed himself back into the fight and squeaked past Ngannou with a narrow split decision.

Initial plans for Friday were for former unified heavyweight champion Joshua to take on longtime rival Deontay Wilder. Such plans were scuttled by Joseph Parker, who bullied, outfought and outboxed Wilder on Dec. 23. Wilder and Parker shared the billing with Joshua, who forced Otto Wallin to be withdrawn by his corner after five rounds.

Fury, speaking to “The Stomping Ground,” said Ngannou should be grateful to him for improving his finances and finding himself in a position to generate more money against Joshua.
