Tyson Fury has, not for the first time, announced his retirement from the boxing ring. But is this really the end of the road for the “Gypsy King”?

The towering 36-year-old British heavyweight called it a day on Monday, just weeks after his second straight defeat by Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia.

“Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet,” he said in a post on social media, apparently filmed inside a vehicle.

“I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing, it has been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it.”

Fury enjoyed two stints as the heavyweight world champion and retires with a record of 34 wins, two defeats and one draw.

That is if he stays retired.

Fury has previously announced his exit on a number of occasions, most recently in April 2022.

But they all turned out to be short-term absences from the ring and many pundits are sceptical that this really is the end.

Daniel Dubois, despite having a tough opponent in Joseph Parker on the horizon, is clear that he wants to unify his heavyweight belt with the three Oleksandr Usyk is in possession of.

Should things play out that way it would be the second time the two champions have faced off. Dubois travelled to Poland back in 2023 to challenge Usyk for the WBA, WBO and IBF belts.

He thought he found some success in the fifth round when the Ukrainian hit the deck, but the shot was immediately ruled to be a low blow and the champion was given ample time to recover before fighting on and taking back control.

Usyk would drop Dubois in the eighth and finish the job in the ninth, with many questioning the young Brit’s grit when he failed to stand to make the referee’s count.

Daniel Dubois has escalated his war of words with Oleksandr Usyk, insisting that the Ukrainian was “lucky” in their first fight and would be beaten in a potential rematch later this year.

However, Usyk’s camp has responded by insisting the Brit won’t even beat Joseph Parker when he makes the first defence of his world heavyweight title next month.

Dubois claimed the IBF title when he beat Anthony Joshua in September and has since called for an undisputed showdown with Usyk, who holds the WBO, WBA and WBC belts.

The pair first met in a controversial fight in Poland in 2023 when Dubois floored the Ukrainian with a body shot in the fifth round, which the referee ruled a low blow and subsequently gave him additional time to recover.

Anthony Joshua has revealed his desire to fight Tyson Fury in 2025, admitting “it has to happen this year”.

There has been incessant talk since about the prospect of a clash between Fury and Joshua, and the latter has now added more fuel to the fire.
“It’s a fight that I want to see,” Joshua said at The Ring Magazine Awards. “I’m a fan of boxing so I want to get that fight underway.

Oleksandr Usyk could hang up the gloves today and be considered both the best cruiserweight and heavyweight of a generation, as well as being in the conversation of all-time greats.

The Ukrainian cleared out a competitive division at 200 pounds before moving to heavyweight and dethroning Anthony Joshua for three of the four major belts.

After a stoppage win against young Daniel Dubois to defend his titles, Usyk entered an undisputed contest with Tyson Fury and defeated the giant Brit to become the first sole champion at heavyweight since Lennox Lewis. Usyk would win the rematch more conclusively.

WBC, WBO, WBA and IBO world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) has been named the best boxer of 2024 by the sports channel ESPN.

Quote: “Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) became the first undisputed heavyweight champion in nearly 25 years when he handed Tyson Fury the first loss of his career in May. The Ukrainian did the job in fashion, too: he landed 14 unanswered punches in Round 9 and was on the verge of a stoppage victory scoring a knockdown.

In the December rematch, the Olympic gold medalist left no doubt with an even clearer unanimous decision victory over Fury, who outweighed Usyk by nearly 60 pounds.”

Details: This nomination is not the only one where the Ukrainian champion won. ESPN recognised Usyk’s first fight against former world champion Tyson Fury, which took place in May, as the best fight of 2024.

Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk, who holds the WBA, WBO, WBC and IBO heavyweight titles, was named the best boxer of 2024 in any weight category by the World Boxing Council.

Details: The organisation justified its decision because Oleksandr Usyk, 37, became the first boxer in the four-belt era to win the absolute heavyweight championship.

Quote: “Usyk has consistently demonstrated his exceptional skills outside of Ukraine, showcasing his global impact on the sport. These achievements solidify Usyk’s legacy as one of the greatest boxers of his generation.”

More details: The best female boxer of the year is Australian Skye Nicolson, 29. She competes in the featherweight division and defeated the main contenders in 2024: Dane Sarah Mahfoud, Dominican Republic’s Dayana Vargas, and UKʼs Raven Chapman.

Lucas Ketelle: I think it will still be Usyk. Naoya Inoue, I think will start to regress this year. I don’t see Crawford fighting after 2025. Artur Beterbiev probably won’t fight after 2025, and who knows what Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is doing. Four of the best 10 fighters in the world might be viewed a lot differently in 2025. I think we are going to see a lot of younger fighters move up into the top-five. Fighters like Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez, Shakur Stevenson and the emergence of Keyshawn Davis as a top-10 pound-for-pound fighter will grab our attention.

Owen Lewis: Inoue or Rodriguez, both of whom are outclassing their opponents by greater margins than the rest of the pound-for-pound elite. Usyk and Crawford will likely begin succumbing to age by year’s end.

Declan Warrington: Oleksandr Usyk. I don’t see another fight that can enhance his reputation any further than it already deserves, but I also don’t see him declining significantly or doing anything to harm it – or another fighter surpassing him in the coming 12 months.

World heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk is set to take an extended break from the sport according to his manager.

The Ukrainian maintained his unbeaten record with a second win over Tyson Fury over Christmas.

Egis Klimas says he expects his client to return to the ring in the summer after resting for the next few months.

It’s believed Usyk’s next fight could be against IBF champion Daniel Dubois who called out the 37 year old in the ring in Riyadh.

Usyk handed Fury the first defeat of his professional career in May via a split decision and then widened the margins in their rematch last month, with all three judges scoring the bout in his favour.

The Ukrainian slickster often gets straight back into training after his fights but his manager Egis Klimas claims his fighter won’t be in the gym again until at least April.

“It’ll be a very long preparation,” Klimas told Boxing Scene. “After another 12 rounds with Fury, he needs a good, long recovery.”

Klimas added that he anticipates Usyk’s next fight will fall at “the end of July, or August.”
