Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic has declared he is a ‘big fan’ of Australian Open villain Danielle Collins as unruly crowd behaviour threatens to escalate at Melbourne Park.

Djokovic, 37, had to endure relentless heckling from a drunk fan during his straight sets win over 26th seed Tomas Machac at Rod Laver Arena on Friday.

The 10-time champion was seen pleading with the umpire to subdue animated supporters, and his frustration was clear after moving through to the fourth round.

Fed up, he told the supporter to ‘shut the f*** up, you f***ing idiot’.

And seconds after nailing a match-winning backhand passing shot down the line, the seventh seed turned to the chief heckler in the crowd and let him know who was victorious.

Just a few games into Emma Raducanu’s first contest of the new season, it was clear that an uncomfortable day lay ahead. Having been forced to withdraw from her first scheduled tournament, Raducanu arrived at the Australian Open rusty and undercooked.

Under the heightened stress of a grand slam first round match, Raducanu’s serve was completely out of control, double faults cascading from her racket.

As was the case with Jack Draper on the same court less than 24 hours earlier, the end goal for any player in this situation is simple: survive for another day so that there are more opportunities during the tournament to improve.

Raducanu showed her survival instincts by fighting through a self-sabotaging 15 double faults to deliver a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) win over Ekaterina Alexandrova, the 26th seed, in the first round of the Australian Open.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have left an indelible mark on tennis history, with many considering them the greatest players of all time. Adding to this debate is Novak Djokovic, who continues to dominate the sport and chase more titles. Opinions are divided when determining who truly ranks as number one among the three, but Andre Agassi leaves no room for doubt.

The 54-year-old American, himself one of the all-time greats, was unequivocal in his choice. While enjoying the Australian Open, Andre Agassi spoke with The Australian and declared that Djokovic surpasses both the Spaniard and the Swiss.

“There are so many ways to look at it, but when you look at it on paper, you just can’t argue with what he’s accomplished,“ said the Las Vegas native. He continued: “The amount that he’s won, the head-to-heads, the Masters (titles), the year-end number ones, the weeks at number one… all those stats.”

The worst athlete is the nervous athlete.

According to Novak Djokovic, this is very simple, but very sound, reasoning. He heard the viewpoint from a Serbian sportscaster whose father is a retired professional boxer. It would seem someone like Djokovic would be impervious to such thoughts. After all, he’s had arguably the most decorated career in men’s tennis history.

But even one of the game’s greatest big match players still gets anxious, even expressing himself in volatile ways.

“I don’t think it’s wrong if you experience those emotions,” he says. “I think it’s part of you, part of the competition, part of because you care about it. It’s difficult to always stay flat. I think what is important is how you bounce back. Always bring yourself back to that optimal state where you are focused on the next move, or the next point or the next moment.”

Bouncing back is what Djokovic plans on doing in 2025.

The 22-year-old British tennis star said her hand and ankle swelled up but she refused the treatment in case contamination led to a positive doping test.

Raducanu told reporters at a pre-tournament news conference on Friday: “All of us are probably quite sensitive to what we take on board, what we use.

“Yesterday, for example, I got really badly bitten by I don’t know what, like ants, mosquitoes, something. I’m allergic, I guess.

“They flared up and swelled up really a lot.”

She added: “Someone was, like, giving me this antiseptic spray, natural, to try to ease the bites.

Djokovic, chasing a record-extending 11th title in Melbourne, has revealed a green disc that he takes everywhere will help him stay in good health during the tournament.

It’s (an) energetic disc (that) creates an electromagnetic field around it and (the) kind of secret is in this pattern,’ he told GQ magazine.
